myopia and associated factors in patients referred to eye clinics of yazd medical university

purpose: to determine the distribution of very low (up to -1 diopter), low (-1 to -3 d), moderate -3 to -6 d), high (-6 to -10 d), and very high (beyond -10 d) myopia in myopic patients referred to eye clinics of yazd medical university during 2004-2005. methods: this cross-sectional study was performed on 482 myopic patients who underwent dry and cycloplegic refraction by retinoscopy as well as autorefractometry to determine the degree of myopia. results: patients included 270 female (56%) and 212 male (44%) subjects with mean age of 27.7±13.7 (range 2-83) years. the mode of age was between 20-30 years. mean myopia was -3.24±3.16 d; the most frequent degree of myopia was low (44.2%) to moderate (33.1%). positive family history was seen in 48.2% of the patients. conclusion: the majority of myopic cases are in low and moderate groups and aged between 20-30 years. positive familial history has important role in myopia prevalence and intensity
